Investigation Into Facebook's Libra Project Uncovers Fresh Clues, Reviving Speculation Over Javier Milei's Alleged Role

A recent discovery of phone records has shed new light on the involvement of Argentine President Javier Milei in the promotion of the Libra cryptocurrency, contradicting his claim of having no ties to the project. On the evening he publicly endorsed the token, Milei engaged in multiple conversations with one of the key figures behind Libra, with a total of seven calls placed before and after his promotional post on the social media platform X.
Although the specifics of these discussions remain unclear, the revelation has sparked further scrutiny into Milei's role in the token's collapse, which resulted in losses of at least $251 million for investors. The dramatic decline of the Libra token's value, which plummeted by over 96% from its peak, has led to Milei facing fraud charges and calls for his impeachment. If convicted, he could face a prison sentence ranging from one month to six years.
The controversy surrounding Milei's promotion of Libra began in February 2025, when he published a post on X touting the token as a means to stimulate Argentina's economy through the funding of small businesses and startups. Following the token's collapse, Milei deleted his posts, prompting allegations of a potential "rug pull" – a scenario in which a project's creators abandon it, leaving investors with significant losses.
Milei has maintained that he did not engage in any wrongdoing, stating that he was simply showcasing a private venture and had no involvement in the project. However, the emergence of phone records and other evidence has raised questions about the nature of his relationship with the Libra project. A federal investigation into the collapse of the Libra token is ongoing, with Milei listed as a person of interest.
In a separate development, Argentina's Anti-Corruption Office cleared Milei of violating public ethics rules in June, determining that his promotional post was a personal statement rather than an official act. Nevertheless, a recent judicial investigation uncovered a draft document on the phone of crypto lobbyist Mauricio Novelli, suggesting a possible $5 million agreement related to Milei's promotion of the Libra token. The draft note, written just three days before Milei's promotional post, does not specify the intended recipient of the funds, leaving further questions about the circumstances surrounding the token's collapse.
