Major Italian Financial Institution Unveils Groundbreaking Digital Asset Partnership Featuring Two Leading Cryptocurrencies

In a notable development, Intesa Sanpaolo, Italy's premier banking institution, has substantially expanded its cryptocurrency portfolio in the initial three months of 2026. The bank's crypto assets skyrocketed from a modest $100 million at the end of 2025 to a staggering $235 million by March 31. A closer examination of the bank's holdings reveals a pronounced emphasis on Bitcoin, with a significant concentration in spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Specifically, Intesa Sanpaolo's stake in the ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF surged from 2.49 million to 3.61 million, while its holdings in the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF climbed from 470,000 to approximately 647,000. Furthermore, the bank established a new position in iShares Bitcoin ETF call options, totaling 2.49 million.
In another significant move, Intesa Sanpaolo ventured into the Ethereum market, acquiring approximately 3.15 million shares of the iShares Staked Ethereum Trust. Additionally, the bank made its foray into the Ripple ecosystem, purchasing 712,319 shares of the Grayscale $XRP Trust, valued at around $18 million. Conversely, the bank drastically reduced its exposure to Solana, with its stake in the Bitwise Solana Staking ETF plummeting from 266,000 to a mere 2,817. This drastic shift in portfolio allocation suggests that Intesa Sanpaolo is now favoring a Bitcoin- and Ethereum-dominated investment strategy.
