Massive Bitcoin Transfer Valued at $739 Million Initiated by Embattled Exchange Ahead of Key Repayment Milestone

In a significant development, the now-defunct cryptocurrency exchange Mt Gox has relocated a substantial portion of its assets, totaling over $739 million, to a freshly created wallet. According to an analysis of data from Arkham Intelligence by Finbold, a transfer of 10,423 Bitcoin, equivalent to approximately $739 million, was executed on June 2 from Mt Gox's cold storage wallet to a new address, 14FEEM…9nc9eq. This move was swiftly followed by another transaction, wherein 116.29 Bitcoin, valued at roughly $8.07 million, was redirected to a separate wallet, 1A4xgf…BJQNj4, merely two hours later. As of the latest update, Mt Gox's cold storage wallet retains a balance of around 34,504 Bitcoin, which translates to a staggering net worth of over $2.4 billion. It is worth noting that the last time a transfer of this magnitude occurred from the cold wallet was six months prior, when the rehabilitation trustee oversaw a series of internal consolidations, potentially laying the groundwork for the impending distribution of funds. The trustee, having secured an extension from the Tokyo court, now has until October 31, 2026, to complete the repayment process, marking a crucial milestone in the prolonged and complex creditor saga that has spanned over a decade. The last major payout of Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash to creditors took place in July 2024, with approximately 47,000 Bitcoin being disbursed through prominent exchanges such as Kraken, Bitstamp, and BitGo. Furthermore, an additional 10,000 Bitcoin was distributed in early 2025, resulting in the total number of verified creditors exceeding 19,000. With the final payout deadline looming, the recent transfer of Bitcoin may be a strategic precursor to ensuring a smooth and efficient distribution of funds to creditors over the next five months.
