Safaricom announced its partnership with a global coalition of technology, payments and crypto firms to disrupt the financial pipelines that sustain illegal wildlife trafficking, a move disclosed at a United for Wildlife event hosted by Prince William.

Coalition Members and AI‑Driven Platform Controls

The alliance brings together industry powerhouses such as Google, Meta, TikTok and Alibaba, alongside a handful of cryptocurrency platforms that operate on public blockchains. These participants have pledged to embed artificial‑intelligence detection tools within their services to intercept illicit listings before any transaction is completed.

By focusing on front‑end content moderation, the coalition intends to complement the parallel effort targeting the back‑end financial networks that move proceeds from poaching operations. The AI systems will scan user‑generated data in real time, flagging suspicious behavior for immediate removal.

Safaricom’s AML Upgrade and M‑Paya Integration

Safaricom, together with its parent companies Vodafone and Vodacom, will roll out AI‑enhanced anti‑money‑laundering (AML) and transaction‑monitoring modules across its M‑Pesa mobile‑money platform. The new infrastructure will automatically identify patterns that match known poaching and trafficking financial flows.
