SoftBank launches AI security for Japan's critical infra

2 min read

SoftBank Group (SFTBY) announced the launch of “Patching as a Service,” an AI‑powered cybersecurity platform, at a Tokyo event on Tuesday, aiming to protect Japan’s largest enterprises from sophisticated digital threats.

Solution Overview

The platform, built by SB OAI Japan—a joint venture between SoftBank Corp and OpenAI created in November—targets the nation’s 3,000 biggest corporations that manage critical assets such as airports, power grids, and transit networks. It operates in two stages: first, it scans for system vulnerabilities; second, it determines and deploys the necessary patches to close those gaps.

Leadership Comments and Expansion Plans

CEO Masayoshi Son warned that Japan’s current cyber defenses resemble outdated weaponry, emphasizing the duty to safeguard essential infrastructure. SoftBank Corp CEO Junichi Miyakawa disclosed that roughly 50 specialists are currently handling the service, with a goal to scale the team to 1,000 members. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was slated to attend the launch, underscoring the strategic collaboration between the two firms.

Market Implications

Investors view the partnership as a strategic move that could bolster confidence in blockchain‑related security solutions across the crypto sector. By reinforcing the cyber resilience of high‑value Japanese assets, SoftBank aims to set a new standard for corporate security in a market increasingly sensitive to digital risk.
